You know how it goes – ask any Lagosian where to grab a bite, and 3 out of 5 will probably mention Eric Kayser. But does it live up to the buzz, or is it just another spot riding the wave of its own hype? I decided to put on my detective hat, dive fork-first into the menu, and find out for myself.
First Impressions: The Service
The moment I walked through the doors of Eric Kayser, it was like being wrapped in a warm, buttery croissant – cozy, welcoming, and oh-so-comfortable. The staff? Impeccable. I’m talking about the kind of service where you feel like they’ve rolled out the red carpet just for you. They’ve got this effortless charm that makes you feel like a VIP without being overbearing. And then there’s the complimentary bread. Fresh, warm, and just waiting to be slathered in butter. I’ll admit, I was tempted to ask for a second round, but I decided to play it cool – I mean, you don’t want to be that person, right?
The Food: Hits
Filet de saumon with potatoes and spinach: 27500
Now, onto the main event: the food. My sister, my ever-discerning foodie partner in crime, ordered the pan-seared salmon with potatoes and spinach. She’s not one to throw around compliments lightly, so when she gave it a 7.5, I knew it was legit. The salmon? A bit on the bland side—it didn’t exactly sing, but it also didn’t offend, What we loved about it was the flavour and texture; it wasn’t overwhelmingly fishy—mild, mildly fishy, and the texture was moist and meaty. The spinach and potatoes, though? Absolute stars of the plate, perfection—flavorful, well-seasoned, and well-prepared. it’s always the simple things that win. The spinach was alright—nothing crazy but quite tasty.
Chicken avocado salad: 15000
My friend, ever the healthy eater, opted for the chicken avocado salad with a side of fries. His verdict? A solid 7. The veggies were fresh, crisp, and vibrant, and the vinaigrette brought a nice zing to the mix. But the fries? Meh. Clearly, the frozen kind, which is always a bit of a letdown (I should point out that this was priced separately at 3500). For the price, I was expecting something a little more… well, special.
kayser XXL Breakfast: 12000
And then there’s me, living my best life with the Kayser XXL breakfast. Picture this: a croissant so flaky it practically shatters at the touch, filled to the brim with cheesy goodness, eggs, sausage, and ham. It was indulgent, it was decadent, it was… almost perfect. When it came to the croissants, though, I’ve had better croissants that made my taste buds do a happy dance. The kind of croissant that makes your eyes close involuntarily with the first bite. Still, it’s a solid option if you’re looking to indulge and this one was definitely worth the calories. Eric Kayser Lagos did something great with this one.
Linguine Chicken Pesto: 14000
As for the pesto pasta that followed? Now, that was a revelation. Spicy, herby, and just the right amount of oily – this dish was the ultimate redemption arc for all the disappointing pesto pastas of my past. An easy 8 out of 10, and yes, I’m still dreaming about it. The pasta was well done, the pesto was balanced and flavorful, and it had a nice kick of spice. It was a bit oily, but I’d have it again and again without hesitation.
Drink Time: Coffee, But Make It Fun
HONEY TONIC: 4000
ESPRESSO ORANGE: 4000
Because we were in the mood to treat ourselves, we decided to go all out with some of their experimental coffee creations. Let me tell you, this wasn’t just coffee; this was a whole experience. These drinks were fun, creative, and exactly what we needed to keep our spirits high. If you’re a coffee enthusiast like me, prepare to have your mind blown. They took our caffeine game to a whole new level, and the honey tonic was my favorite. It had a lemoney, and sweet coffee taste. Sadly, i forgot to take a photo. (But you can see what they look like in the video link below.)
The Pastry Letdown: The Not-So-Sweet Truth
Cake Loaves: 7500 each
And now, the part I was most excited about – the pastries. You see, I have a sweet tooth the size of Lagos, so I was expecting to be blown away. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. The cake loaves we tried were a bit of a letdown. Dry, tough, and just not what I was hoping for. It was like expecting a fireworks show and getting a couple of sparklers instead. A bit of a bummer, to be honest, especially from a place with such a strong pastry reputation.
Sweet Redemption: Ice Cream to the Rescue
But all was not lost, my friends. Just when I was about to let the pastry disappointment sink in, along came the ice cream. Four flavours later, and I was back on cloud nine. i can’t remember all the flavors we ordered but you see the cheesecake cake flavour? Absolute heaven in a cup. Creamy, rich, and packed with flavour – it was the kind of ice cream that makes everything right in the world. If you go to Eric Kayser Lagoa and don’t try the ice cream, you’re doing yourself a serious disservice.
The Menu at Eric Kayser Lagos
Eric Kayser Lagos offers a diverse menu that caters to a wide range of tastes, which I appreciated during my visit. From freshly baked bread and pastries to rich desserts and hearty meals, there’s something for every craving. However, the wide selection left me feeling a bit indecisive—there were just too many delicious options to choose from! In terms of pricing, for Lagos standards, it’s relatively affordable, but considering the current economic climate, it still leans towards the pricier side. It’s the kind of spot where you splurge a little but feel good about it afterward.
Final Thoughts: Is Eric Kayer Lagos Worth your coins?
So, is Eric Kayser Lagos worth the hype? I’d say yes—but with a little side-eye for those pastries. Overall, I’d give it a solid 7 out of 10. The service is stellar, the savoury dishes are mostly hits, and the ice cream is a non-negotiable must-have. If you haven’t been yet, what are you waiting for? Go check it out—just maybe skip the cake loaves and save room for extra ice cream and the croissant.
